Strokes are sudden, unpredictable, and impactful. It’s imperative that, at the first sign of stroke, you seek treatment. At the Medical Center, we have a variety of institutions that treat stroke and neurological damage, and also research the cause, prevention, and treatment of strokes in individuals of all ages.

There are two main causes of stroke: a blood clot in the brain or a bursting blood vessel, which interrupts the blood flow to a specific area of the brain. Stroke claims about 140,000 lives per year, making it the third leading cause of death in the US, and a leading cause of disability. Although strokes are unpredictable, certain behaviors can increase an individual’s risk for stroke, like smoking, obesity, and alcohol use. Every day, physicians and neurosurgeons at the Medical Center work hard to understand, treat, and prevent strokes in patients around the world by performing cutting-edge research and creating new, innovative procedures to lessen the effects of stroke.
